Chambers advances at CAC Games

Barbadian tennis player Hannah Chambers recorded two victories for Team Barbados at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in the Dominican Republic on Friday. Chambers battled past El Salvador’s Gabriella Tevez in a three-set encounter, winning the opening set 6-3 before losing the second 3-6. She recovered in the decisive set, winning 6-4 to advance to the second round. Fellow Barbadian Gabrielle Leslie was eliminated in the round of 32 after losing 6-3, 6-1 to Dominican Republic’s Ana Zamburek. Leslie was back in action in the opening round of the women’s doubles competition, where she teamed up with Chambers to defeat their Venezuelan opponents 6-4, 6-1. Kaipo Marshall was eliminated in the opening round of the men’s singles competition by Nicholas Gore of Jamaica. The Barbadian went down 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, while Caesar Cruz of El Salvador defeated Barbadian Stephen Slocombe 6-4, 6-2. The first Barbadian in action on Friday was archer Javier Jordan. Competing in the opening round of the men’s individual compound, Jordan finished 20th in a field of 29 competitors. On day two of the team badminton competition, El Salvador defeated Barbados 4-1. The lone success for Barbados came as the doubles pair of Kennie King and Shai Martin battled past their opponents  21-17, 18-21, 21-17, as Barbados failed to win a game in the other matchups. Following an opening round 4-1 defeat by Venezuela on Thursday, the Barbadian quartet was blanked 5-0 by Guatemala in their second encounter.
