Five Afghan Migrants Found Dead After Attempting to Reach Iran

The bodies of five Afghan young men from Mir Qasim Jan village in Chamtal district of northern Balkh province were buried on Tuesday after they reportedly died while travelling to Iran through an irregular migration route, local sources said. The five men had reportedly left their homes about a week earlier in an attempt to travel to Iran. According to local sources, they died in the deserts of Nimroz province due to extreme heat and a lack of drinking water. Their deaths highlight the dangers faced by Afghans travelling through unofficial routes to reach Iran, particularly across remote desert areas where extreme temperatures, dehydration and limited access to water can pose serious risks. The incident comes as efforts reportedly continue to locate another group of Afghan migrants who went missing while attempting to travel to Iran through an irregular route in Nimroz. According to information provided by local sources, 19 young men reportedly left for Iran about two weeks earlier and later disappeared in the province’s deserts. Their vehicle allegedly broke down in the Margow desert in Chakhansur district, after which the group reportedly lost its way. The sources said extreme heat and a lack of drinking water led to deaths among some members of the group, while the whereabouts of 14 others remained unknown. Search efforts were reportedly continuing. The latest reports are part of a broader pattern of deaths involving Afghans attempting to reach Iran through unofficial routes. Migrants travelling through remote areas can face extreme heat, dehydration, difficult terrain and the risk of becoming lost far from populated areas.
