Belize City woman slapped with cyberbullying charged over alleged Facebook Live attack on police officer

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old Belize City woman was arraigned on Monday on a cybercrime charge arising from statements allegedly made about a female police officer during a Facebook Live broadcast. Amika Shanee Chanel Betran, a housewife of Partridge Street, appeared before a Senior Magistrate and pleaded not guilty to using a computer system to disseminate a statement she allegedly knew to be false with the intention of harming another person’s reputation. Police allege that on July 11, 2026, Betran made insulting and sexually suggestive remarks about a 28-year-old police constable during a livestream posted under the Facebook account “Yanzie Chayqnnel Betran.” The officer reportedly learned about the broadcast from her sister and later viewed and screen-recorded the video. She told investigators that the comments left her feeling embarrassed and insulted and caused harm to her reputation. Betran was detained on July 18 and formally charged the following day. The prosecution did not object to bail, and Betran was granted bail in the sum of $1,500 with one surety of the same amount. She was ordered not to contact the complainant or her relatives, interfere with prosecution witnesses or make any social media posts concerning the officer or the case. The Magistrate warned that any breach of the conditions could result in her bail being revoked. Before securing bail, Betran was also required to settle an outstanding fine of $75. Her case was adjourned until September 7, 2026.
