HIGHLIGHTS
Insecurity leads to an increase in basic commodity prices in Zemio
850 returnees receive multisectoral assistance in Ouham-Pendé
Bria: Humanitarian actors assess urgent needs of CAR returnees from Sudan
GENERAL CONTEXT
Haut-Mbomou Prefecture – South-East
For over a year, the deterioration of the security situation in Haut-Mbomou has had a severe humanitarian impact on civilian populations, particularly in Zemio and surrounding areas. Movement restrictions and insecurity along key routes have reduced physical access to markets and disrupted supply chains. As a result, prices of staple foods and essential goods have sharply increased—up to threefold for some items—significantly reducing household purchasing power and access to adequate food. The scarcity of goods in local markets, combined with high prices, limits household access to food, especially among the most vulnerable, and worsens the risk of food insecurity, while encouraging negative coping strategies. In Haut-Mbomou, 32,000 people don’t always know whether they will have enough food, due to the prevailing security situation and other factors.
HUMANITARIAN NEEDS AND RESPONSE
Multi-sector
Haute-Kotto Prefecture – Central
On 3 June, a joint needs assessment mission composed of the Comité international d’aide d’urgence et de développement (CIAUD), Plan International, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and OCHA visited Ngoubi village, 18 km from Bria, to assess the needs of spontaneous returnees from Sudan. This mission follows the arrival in Bria on 22 May of CAR returnees from Sudan, after a journey of approximately 20 days under difficult conditions, during which one person died. A total of 31 households (130 people) were registered. Priority needs identified include food assistance, livelihood support (including cassava cuttings), shelter and essential household items, access to health services, education for children, Water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) and protection. Efforts are ongoing to mobilize assistance to address these needs rapidly.
Food Security
Mbomou Prefecture – South-East
From 1 to 5 June, the NGO Action communautaire pour la reconstruction et le développement durable (ACRED), with support from the Humanitarian Fund, distributed agricultural inputs to 150 vulnerable households, including host communities and IDPs, in Pombolo. Distributed inputs included seeds (groundnuts, paddy rice, maize, squash), tools and other items (hoes, machetes, tarpaulins, basins, and empty sacks). This distribution is part of an emergency project aimed at supporting early recovery for households facing food insecurity.
