Eugen Tomac nominated as Romanian PM
Romanian President Nicusor Dan on Thursday nominated his adviser Eugen Tomac as prime minister-designate, reported Xinhua. Tomac, a member of the European Parliament and leader of a party not in Romania's legislature, will have 10 days to form a government and secure the parliament's vote of confidence, according to the Romanian Constitution. His nomination comes after the parliament approved a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government in early May, forcing Bolojan and his cabinet to step down. "Because the parties do not agree with each other, the only possible solution is a prime minister who is independent of the parties in Parliament," Dan said, adding that Tomac is a person with the political experience of discussing with each party in Parliament as "consensus is needed." Tomac said that he will present a proposal to parliament for a "technical government, not a political one." According to Romanian national news agency Agerpres, Tomac, president of Romania's People's Movement Party (PMP), sits with the centrist Renew Europe group in the European Parliament. Romania's two largest parliamentary parties, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), submitted a no-confidence motion against Bolojan's government in late April. Parliament approved the motion backed by 281 lawmakers, well above the 233 votes required for it to pass.
