4 killed in light aircraft crash in western Croatia
Four people were killed when a Germany-registered light aircraft crashed near Medulin in western Croatia on Thursday, Croatian authorities said, reported Xinhua. The aircraft had departed from Austria and was en route to Medulin when it went down shortly before noon, according to local media reports. Alana Vukic, director of Croatia's Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency, said the agency was notified of the crash at 11:20 a.m. local time (0920 GMT). All four victims were male. Two have been identified as Austrian pilots, while the identities of the two passengers have yet to be confirmed, Vukic said, adding that the agency is in contact with the Austrian embassy. A safety investigation has been launched in cooperation with Austrian authorities to determine the cause of the crash. Investigators are examining the wreckage at the scene. Because light aircraft are not equipped with flight data recorders, commonly known as black boxes, the investigation could take several months, Vukic said. A preliminary investigation report is expected within 30 days, according to the agency.
