Stubb for dialogue with US on tariffs, vows support for Greenland
President Alexander Stubb on Saturday said that tariffs would undermine the transatlantic relationship and risk a dangerous downward spiral and viewed that dialogue with the United States will continue.
The President in a post on his social media platform X also emphasized the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty and expressed support to Denmark and Greenland.
Stubb made the remarks following the announcement of US President Donald Trump of imposing extra tariffs on all goods from Finland and seven other European countries, who opposed the US attempt to acquire Greenland, sent troops and diplomatic assets this week to the Arctic territory.
“Dialogue with the United States continues. Tariffs would undermine the transatlantic relationship and risk a dangerous downward spiral,” the President wrote in his post late Saturday night.
He also said that among allies, issues are best resolved through discussion, not through pressure.
The President also wrote that strengthening Arctic security together with allies is very important for Finland and this is also the purpose of the Danish-led and allied-coordinated action in Greenland.
“European countries stand united. We emphasize the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. We support Denmark and Greenland,” Stubb added.
Earlier on the day, Trump said that the United States will impose 10-percent tariffs on all goods from Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain and the Netherlands over Greenland starting on Feb. 1.
Those tariffs would increase to 25 percent on June 1, and would continue until a deal is reached for the United States to purchase Greenland, Trump said on social media.
Meanwhile, the President and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Saturday held an information meeting and discussed contemporary global and European issues and their significance for Finland, said the President office of Finland in a press release.
The meeting focused on the situation of global power politics and position of Finland, the press release added without pointing out details of the discussion.
