Tel Aviv /PNN/Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the country's security forces to take "strong action" against what he claimed were militant targets in the Gaza Strip, accusing Hamas of breaching the ceasefire. The fragile ceasefire in Gaza appears to be on the brink of collapse on Sunday after Israel launched airstrikes on Rafah in the south and Jabalia in the north, killing at least two people and injuring others, according to media reports.Al Arabiya TV reported that humanitarian aid convoys from the Rafah crossing toward Karm Abu Salem and Al-Awja crossings were halted. At the same time, Israeli tanks fired heavily in eastern Khan Younis. An emergency source said several Palestinians were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a civilian gathering in the central town of Al-Zawaida.The Israeli military confirmed it carried out air strikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday in response to alleged militant fire on its troops."Earlier today, terrorists fired anti-tank missiles and opened fire on army forces operating to destroy terrorist infrastructure in the Rafah area in accordance with the terms of the agreement," the military claimed in a statement.“The army responded with air strikes by fighter jets and artillery fire, targeting the Rafah area to neutralise the threat, and destroying several operational tunnels and military structures where terrorist activity was detected.”Earlier, the Israeli army claimed Hamas fighters carried out multiple attacks against its forces outside the buffer zone, known as the "Yellow Line," calling them "blatant violations" of the ceasefire.Netanyahu reportedly left a cabinet meeting for urgent consultations with the defence minister and senior officials."Following a ceasefire violation by Hamas, Prime Minister Netanyahu held consultations with the defence minister and senior security officials and instructed to take strong action against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip," Netanyahu's office said in a statement. The office added that Netanyahu issued these instructions after a meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz and the heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad. On the other hand, Hamas's armed wing insisted on Sunday that the group is adhering to the ceasefire agreement with Israel and was unaware of any clashes in Rafah, where the Israeli military carried out air strikes."We reaffirm our full commitment to implement everything that was agreed upon, foremost of which is a ceasefire across all areas of the Gaza Strip," the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement."We have no knowledge of any incidents or clashes taking place in the Rafah area, as these are red zones under the occupation's control, and contact with the remaining groups of ours there has been cut off since the war resumed in March of this year."
