Kunzvi Dam Construction Reaches 60% Completion – ZINWA

The construction of Kunzvi Dam on the Nyagui River is reported to be 60% complete, with authorities claiming the project remains on track to meet its scheduled completion deadline. According to Davison Madondo, the resident engineer from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), current efforts are focused on excavating the spillway foundation and building homes for seven families being relocated to make way for the dam. Said Madondo: We are focused on spillway excavations and the construction of homes for the affected households. The project is now 60% complete. Special Adviser to the President, Joram Gumbo, on Wednesday, toured the Kunzvi Dam construction site alongside Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Secretary, Tavabarira Kutamahufa, and other government officials.  He said the dam is of critical importance, not only for Goromonzi and Murehwa, but for the entire country. Gumbo added that the dam will supply clean water to Harare, Epworth, and surrounding suburbs, while also supporting agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. Harare primarily sources its water from Lake Chivero and its tributaries. However, the city’s water supply faces ongoing challenges due to pollution from industrial waste and untreated sewage inflows. The municipal water treatment system, originally designed in the 1960s, now struggles to meet the city’s growing demand.  It currently produces approximately 704 megalitres per day, while estimated daily consumption ranges between 800 and 1,300 megalitres. As a result of these limitations, Harare frequently experiences water shortages, forcing many residents to rely on groundwater sources such as boreholes and shallow wells. More: NewsDay
