Bulawayo Water Supply Disrupted After Major Pipeline Burst

The City of Bulawayo has issued an update on the ongoing water supply challenges, following a major pipeline burst that has left several suburbs without running water.  The burst occurred on Thursday, 26 May 2025, along the 675mm transport pipeline connecting the Criterion Water Treatment Works to the Magwegwe Reservoir. This pipeline is a key component of the city’s water infrastructure, supplying potable water to all western suburbs of Bulawayo, including the Magwegwe Reservoir zone. As a result of the burst, water supplies to these areas have been severely disrupted. The situation was further compounded by scheduled maintenance works on compartments 1 and 2 of the Magwegwe Reservoir outlet, which were completed on 31 May 2025.  The City of Bulawayo has since been working to source the necessary materials to carry out repairs. In a notice on Wednesday, 04 June, the local authority said that the repair work has been delayed due to safety concerns. The force of the burst eroded a nearby roadside embankment, posing a risk to workers on-site.  To address this, the city has begun constructing a new embankment to stabilise the area and ensure worker safety during the repair process. The affected areas include suburbs supplied via the Magwegwe Reservoir such as Cowdray Park, Pelandaba West, Magwegwe, Njube, Mabutweni, Gwabalanda, Entumbane, Mpopoma, Matshobane, Lobengula, Emakhandeni and Luveve.  Areas receiving water directly from the Criterion line include Nketa 6–9, Emganwini, Nkulumane 1–5 and 10–12, Bellevue, Newton West, West Somerton and the Matopo Research Centre. The City of Bulawayo anticipates completing the repair works and restoring the water supply by Monday, 9 June 2025.
